Boston, May 1960, by Nick Dewolf

Dewolf was the co-founder of Teradyne, a Boston-based manufacturer of automatic test equipment. He’s credited with designing more than 300 semiconductors, including the J259, the world’s first computer-operated integrated circuit tester. He also loved photography. You can now see his beautiful archive on Flickr.

Here we see the nine bridges crossing the Harlem River in the foreground (which joins the East River due south) and the majestic George Washington Bridge bounding over the mighty Hudson towards the highlands of northern New Jersey.

“Shteyngart says the first thing that happened when he bought an iPhone “was that New York fell away … It disappeared. Poof.” That’s the first thing I noticed too: the city disappeared, along with any will to experience. New York, so densely populated and supposedly sleepless, must be the most efficient place to hone observational powers. But those powers are now dulled in me. I find myself preferring the blogs of remote strangers to my own observations of present ones. Gone are the tacit alliances with fellow subway riders, the brief evolution of sympathy with pedestrians. That predictable progress of unspoken affinity is now interrupted by an impulse to either refresh a page or to take a website-worthy photo. I have the nervous hand-tics of a junkie. For someone whose interest in other people’s private lives was once endless, I sure do ignore them a lot now.”

As a European, I feel more myself in New York than in the European Union’s semi-detached British satellite, and I have Brazilian and Arab friends here who share the sentiment. To be sure, we all have our complaints. And while there is no other city where I could imagine living, there are many places that, for different purposes, I would rather be. But this too is a very New York sentiment. Chance made me an American, but I chose to be a New Yorker. I probably always was.”

““I started doing stand-up because I don’t have any skills; I don’t know what else to do. They were all bad. I was a waiter at a drag queen restaurant in New York that was owned by Kurdish rebels. I remember that — his name was Talib — and he tried to get me to dress as a woman. He’d call me on the phone and he’d be like, ‘Ok Zach, this is Talib, your schedule is you work Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and don’t forget to dress as woman.’ And I’m like, ‘Talib, I’m not going to dress as a woman. That’s not my thing.’ And he’d say, ‘You’d make more money.’ And I was like, ‘Why is there a guy from small-town North Carolina talking to a Kurdish rebel about dressing like a woman?’ It was so bizarre, but that was the state of my work experience.””
